You really can't compare, because it was a different era of TV. People now watch with DVR/TIVO's and they did not watch as much cable channels. However, the first season with John Ritter the ratings were fantastic, often in the 15-20 million range. The next season it dropped off after The Goodbye episode. In the third season it moved to Friday and the ratings were in the 4-6 million range some weeks, sometimes it reached 8 million, but maybe only once or twice. BBT are much better.

If you want to really see how the show is doing the best thing to do is compare it to the other 8:00 sitcoms of the week, because the 8:00 time slot is the lowest rated of the night, so comparing it to other 8:00 sitcoms is the best way to do it.

As you can see the ratings are excellent. If it can keep the ratings up it is a sure thing renewal. The only caution I must give is the ratings will hit a crimp in January, when FOX moves their # 2 show, House into the time slot on January 19. The ratings dip will be expected. BBT is on the way to being here for many years to come. I don't know how you feel about this, but Bridget Hennessey is becoming more and more a character in history, while Kaley becomes Penny from The Big Bang Theory more and more everday.

I had no idea 8 Simple Rules was doing that amazing when John was alive. When he passed the show was still great but people just didn't seem to wanna watch anymore.
I still say that 8 Simple Rules was the better show but BBT is doing amazing so it's all good! BBT is good too but 8SR was just perfect.
By the way that 10 million mark for BBT looks good doesn't it?

Yeah, 8 Simple Rules was going to be a huge megahit show before John Ritter died. After his death people watched his final three episodes, the Goodbye episode, and then a few shows after that. It took the show a while to find itself again after John, and it became really good again late in the second season. Unfortunately, lots of people gave up on the show without John Ritter, and it never really rebounded. Then ABC moved it too the death slot of 8:00 on Friday, and that finished it. I loved it, too. It was really too bad what happend with John Ritter. However, I still thought it was a good show, and actually got better ratings than anything ABC has replaced it with since.
The 10 million for BBT is very, very impressive. I am a little worried about tonight, because I did not think it was their best episode. Not realy a good way to follow up the series high show. I hope they don't, but I fear the ratings could suffer a little. I really would hate to see it go under 10 million now that it achieved that milestone. We'll see tomorrow.

ummm i would have to agree with you cause i wouldn't
like it if the show falls below the 10 million mark either
so lets hope for the best ,

Here are this week's ratings :
CBS – The Big Bang Theory
Viewers: 9.76 million (#2), A18-49: 3.8/10 (#2)
Just as I thought it dropped from the 10 million viewrs. Still solid ratings, but keeping that 10 million mark is going to be awfully difficult.
